In this paper, a three component model-based decomposition method with generalized volume scattering model is proposed to mitigate the negative scattering power problem and the scattering mechanism ambiguity presented in Freeman decomposition method. By combining adaptive decomposition technique with an optimization constraint, we can remove many of the assumption in the Freeman method when performing decomposition. The polarimetric ESAR L-band of Oberfaffenhofen were used to show the efficiency of proposed decomposition method. The results of the experiments show that the proposed method has better performance than the three-component decomposition model in distinguishing different types of terrains.
