Abstract

This paper presents the influence of composition contents on several energetic characteristics (combustion heat, gaseous volume) of the gas-generating pyrotechnic mixture containing sodium azide, potassium nitrate. Moreover, the effect of particle size of potassium nitrate and pressed density of the pyrotechnic mixture on the combustion rate is also investigated. Based on the received experimental and theoretical results, the optimal sodium azide/potassium nitrate ratio of 76/24 with 0.04 ÷ 0.06 mm of particle size of potassium nitrate at the pressed density of 1.7 g/cm3 is determined. The pyrotechnic mixture can be used for automobile airbags and other applications.
